Architecture of SAP Business Objects Enterprise (SAP BOE)

This article outlines the overall platform architecture, system, and service components that make up the Business Objects Enterprise Business Intelligence (BI) platform.

SAP BOE has a five-tier architecture. I will provide a summary of what each of these tiers consist at present. We will delve into each of these tiers in separate sessions, much later in the advanced session.

Business Objects Enterprise Architecture

1. Client Tier:

This tier consists of the applications with which the end-users interact. This tier enables the users to administer the system with applications such as Central Management Console (CMC) and Central Configuration Manager(CCM), to view reports using InfoView etc.

2. Application Tier:

The application tier consists of server side components that handle the requests from client tier and pass it to the underlying intelligence tier. Some of the components found in this tier are Application Server, Web Component Adapter (WCA), BOE SDK etc.

3. Intelligence Tier:

This is the most important of all tiers. This tier consists of services that handle requests, navigates them to appropriate servers, maintains security and audit information and stores report instances. The File Repository Servers (FRS consisting of Input and Output FRS) handles storage of report instances, Central Management Server (CMS) handles all the requests, security, etc., reside on this tier.

4. Processing Tier:

This is the tier where the components that interact directly with the database reside. The services in this tier are responsible for extracting data and generating reports. Some of the components of these tier are Report Job Server, Program Job Server, Web Intelligence Job Server, Web Intelligence Report Server.

5. Data Tier:

This is the tier where all the databases which store data used for reporting is included.
